We all feel depressed from time to time, but when depression becomes severe or prolonged it can greatly interfere with our daily routine, relationships and overall sense of well-being.

Psychotherapy can help individuals who are depressed in several ways. First, supportive counselling can help ease the pain of depression and address the feeling of hopelessness that comes with depression. Second, cognitive therapy helps change the pessimistic ideas, unrealistic expectations, and overly critical self evaluations that cause and sustain this feeling. Cognitive therapy can help you better recognize which life problems are critical and which problems are minor. It will also help you in developing positive life goals and a more positive self-assessment of yourself. Third, problem solving therapy will assist you in changing the areas of your life that are a major source of stress and contributing to the depression.

As psychotherapists, we do not and cannot prescribe medication. We will respect your choice to use or not use medication and are happy to work in collaboration with your family physician or psychotherapist in this regard.
