PSYCHOTHERAPY FAQ’s

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, counselling or simply therapy, is a general term for treating mental health issues by talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist or psychotherapist. There are many different modes of psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), psychoanalytic, solution-focused and body-focused to name just a few. The basis for psychotherapy rests with communicastion between the client and the therapist through talking.

How many sessions will I require?

The number of sessions you will require depends upon your particular problem, specific needs, severity of symptoms, how long you have been dealing with the situation and how quickly you make progress. Also, while some problems may be personal, and require just a few sessions, others may include a variety of relationships, and therefore require more.

How do I know if I need psychotherapy?

Only you can decide whether you wish to try psychotherapy. Just talking about your issues confidentially with someone who is not a friend or family member can make a world of difference. Psychotherapy provides a regular time for those experiencing distress to be seen in a safe environment, where they can explore their feelings and discuss their problems. A therapist can help you develop more effective ways of coping, allowing you to live the life you deserve.

Does what is discussed in counselling remain confidential?

Yes, everything discussed in therapy remains confidential, with certain exceptions where the therapist is required by law to report if a client is a threat to be a danger to themselves or others and also where child or sexual abuse is an issue.

Do you prescribe medication?

As psychotherapists, we do not and cannot prescribe medication. We are respectful of one’s choice to use or not use medication, and we are happy to work collaboratively with your family physician or psychiatrist in this regard.

How much do psychotherapy sessions cost?

The cost for psychotherapy is $180 for individuals and $205 for couples (HST included) per session (50 minutes), and will be discussed with you in detail before your first session. Our fee may be covered in full or in part by your workplace benefit plan. We provide receipts for each payment which may be used for tax purposes.

Do you offer a sliding scale for fees?

Yes, we offer a sliding-scale for fees to individuals and couples with no workplace benefit plan, who demonstrate a financial need for a reduced fee. These reduced fees appointments are available only on a limited basis. Please call for availability.
